The Path of Williams reclamation of the Christian Death name sparked a fierce court battle with Valor Kand, who eventually won trademark rights and forced Williams to bill his version of the band as Christian Death featuring Rozz Williams. In mid-1985, Rozz Williams left Christian Death, in part due to his increasing interest in experimental music and performance art. Rozz reemerged in 1989 to reclaim the reigns of Christian Death. Reuniting with former bandmates Rikk Agnew and Eva Ortiz, they embarked on a U. and Canadian tour that carried them into 1990. Upon returning to Los Angeles, read more. Christian Death is an American rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1979 by Rozz Williams. They became a highly influential act, heralding the American gothic rock and deathrock movements. After the release of their third album Ashes in 1985, Williams left the band and then-guitarist Valor Kand replaced him as the lead vocalist. Rozz Williams born Roger Alan Painter November 6, 1963 April 1, 1998 was an American musician, poet, artist, and performance artist. Most known for his work with the bands Christian Death, Shadow Project with musician Eva O, and with the industrial project Premature Ejaculation. Christian Death is cited by some as a pioneer of the American gothic rock scene as well as deathrock, and is considered to be one of the most influential figures of the scene. However, Williams disliked the goth label. work Rozz had released using the name Christian Death featuring Rozz Williams after his departure from Christian Death. 4:47 The Iron Mask 14:43 Random Interesting Goth Stuff 16:06 The Path of Sorrows 25:18 The. "Psalm (Maggot's Lair)" opens sounding a lot like ROZZ WILLIAMS' solo album - not really music, but a series of blended sounds over which our happy poet/vocalist paints his gloomy tale of murder & existance traversing death itself, adapting the 23rd Psalm & various other Religious imagery to his own darkness, The music combines dark Gregorian chanting & Industrial samples with his spoken voice in an impressively symbiotic clash of images. "The Path Of Sorrows" uses slow, dark, smashing feedback grunge guitar with plodding bass & ponderous drums as a perfect backdrop for ROZZ's slightly hysterical Goth voice - a wildly nasty song which should please any fan of this music. It picks up tempo towards it's conclusion, kicking into "Hour Of The Wolf", becoming a behemoth of distorted Gothic Rock, surfin' on the edge of pure noise, "In Absentia" remains in the darkness, wandering through post-BAUHAUS tunnels of breathy organ, dimension- ripping axe & punnnelling drums while the lyrics kiss a dark life into the vocalist's inner Demons. "Mother" is a ponderous piece, initially as peaceful as the COCTEAU TWINS at their most beauteously descriptive, yet CHRISTIAN DEATH manage to inject an almost viral feel in there, combining pre-chilled voice with odd off-key sounds over the harmonic feedback guitar & piano which briefly rises here & there. "The Angels (Cruciform)" is built on a lighter, more melodic track - bright drums, piano, rumbling bass & the savage guitar surprisingly in harness beneath with even a lighter approach to the vocals. Only at the end does it change, through rippling harp & fading fragments of grated guitar. "Book Of Lies" again opens on a lighter note, adopting a more Eastern Folk sound with bright acoustic-sounding guitar complimented by a running bass. It has a sort of CURRENT 93 feel to it the innoculous blended into the understated malign. "A Widows Dream" is a sad song with the guitar harnessing it's incontestable power, creating a classy melodic sound against the drumming. It reminds me of MAGAZINE at their very best, with even ROZZ WILLIAMS nodding apparently unconsciously towards DEVOTO's mostly spoken-yet-strong style. Chord changes thrill me the same way "Permafrost" used to. "Easter (In The Tombs)" is a strange thing - thinly built on a sequential synth sound, recapturing the more spacious & disturbing atmosphere of CHRISTIAN DEATH at their best. Chillingly bizarre, it portrays a mind at the ragged edge of creative sanity. "Venus In Furs" is of course a cover version of the old VELVET UNDERGROUND track - a lot more straightforward than some versions I've heard. They've tried to capture the original sound & feel (complete with the violin which here comes across a degree lighter. but no less weird). ROZZ's slightly hysterical sounding voice adds a little more tension to it. A slightly warmed version of a strange & disturbing song it may not please VELVS fans, but is a worthwhile tribute to Masochism.
